The debate season has begun. Here are some highlights:
The team of Brett Bricker and Nate Johnson won the Kentucky Round Robin. The round robin features the top nine teams in the country. Everybody debates everybody and the team with the most wins is crowned the victor. Kansas BJ went 6-2 with wins over Harvard, USC, Wake Forest, Towson (yes, the same one), Berkeley and Michigan State. Brett Bricker was the top speaker at the tournament.
As a brief update, the KY invitational is in progress. Kansas BJ advanced to elimination rounds with a 7-1 record. Kansas PS (Mathew Peterson and Chris Stone) and KQ (Sean Kennedy and Dylan Quigley) each also advanced with 5-3 records.
Two Kansas teams are also competing at the Las Vegas invitation hosted by Jayhawk alum Jake Thompson. Each of these teams finished 5-2 (Erum Shah and Patrick Kennedy, Mark Wilkins and Andrew Jack).
The weekend prior Kansas had two teams in regional competition at Wichita State University. Mark Wilkins and Patrick Kennedy finished their preliminary debates as the only undefeated team, earning their first loss in the quarterfinals. The JV team of Alyssa Kennedy and Kai Davis won their division and Alyssa was named the top speaker.
The season kicked off the week prior to Wichita State. Again Kansas split the squad. Bricker and Johnson were the undefeated top seed, also waiting for the quarterfinals to earn their first loss. Brett Bricker was the top speaker at this tournament as well. Chris Stone and Mathew Peterson advanced to elimination rounds with a 6-2 record and lost a close competition in the double octo-finals. At the same time teams were in competition at the University of Northern Iowa. Andrew Jack and Mark Wilkins won second place honors while Erum Shah and Patrick Kennedy also advanced to elimination debates. Alyssa Kennedy and Kai Davis won second place in the Junior Varsity division.
